S035: Lost Time

Date: 2022-07-30

Short

After defeating the electrical behir and planting the mysterious seed, the party salvaged treasure from the lair and returned to May's cottage to confirm their bargain was complete. May crushed a blue crystal and declared the Skola Vale restored, but as the party departed, Barlo witnessed her true form—a hag with pallid green skin presiding over a garden of death and decay. The party then fled through the Feywild forest when they encountered a massive Dracohydra hunting other creatures, barely escaping as the hundred-foot beast with five dragon heads devastated everything in its path. They successfully reached Skola Vale with the help of their Almiraj friend, but immediately noticed disturbing changes—Bastion had grown a beard, Artie had suddenly reached full size, and Barlo had completely lost his memories of entering the Feywild.

The shocking truth was revealed when the Elder of Skola Vale informed them that three years had passed in the material plane during their brief time in the Feywild. Bastion restored Barlo's lost memories with powerful magic, flooding three years of experiences back into his mind. The village had been rebuilt in their absence, their airship fully restored, and a statue erected in their honor. Shadow confronted the Elder about her missing brother Beast, who appeared alongside the rescued dryad Deodara to expose the pixie Apple Cedarfrost's conspiracy to kidnap the dryad for breeding meenlocks. The Elder imprisoned the treacherous pixie and offered the party lands to the north if they would clear them of dangers, while warning that planting the seed in Shadowfell-tainted soil might have unforeseen consequences. Exhausted and overwhelmed by the revelations, the party settled in to rest and contemplate their next moves.

Summary

After defeating the massive electrical behir and planting the mysterious seed in its lair, the party took a brief rest to tend their wounds and salvage valuable parts from the fallen beast. Shadow noticed a subtle change in the area—a faint haze had begun to settle over the pools scattered throughout the cavern. While investigating, she discovered a scattered collection of coins, including 131 electrum pieces and 487 gold, which she divided among the group. Barlo examined the ancient stonework surrounding them, recognizing the runes as a variation of Loross, the ancient Netherese language they had encountered beneath the Ziggurat. Though he couldn't decipher their exact meaning, he carefully copied the symbols into Grognard's journal, hoping that Umbercresct or further study might reveal their secrets.

With their business concluded, the party decided to return to May's cottage to see if the elfin maiden had upheld her end of their bargain. They navigated back through the twisting paths of the Feywild forest, eventually arriving at the cottage where May greeted them from beneath the great tree. When they confirmed they had slain the beast and planted the seed, May reached into the tree itself and withdrew a long blue crystal. She crushed it in her hands, mumbling arcane words as the fragments fell and disappeared into nothingness. Her eyes briefly turned milky white before returning to normal, and she declared that the Skola Vale had been restored to its proper state, no longer flickering between planes.

Though Barlo and Shadow harbored suspicions about May's true nature, they accepted her word and prepared to leave. As they walked away from the cottage and passed through the gates, Barlo glanced back to witness a disturbing transformation. The lush greenery within the fence withered and died, revealing a landscape of decay and death. May's beautiful form melted away, exposing her true appearance—pallid green skin, a large hooked nose, and the unmistakable features of a hag. She smiled knowingly at them as the gate closed, her red-capped minions continuing their sinister work among the dead gardens. Calliope realized her fey heritage had allowed her glimpses through the illusion all along, though the full truth had been hidden until now.

The party ventured back into the Feywild forest, moving cautiously through the darker regions where patches of skylight filtered through the canopy. Shadow led the way, but soon noticed something unsettling—the path markers she had scratched into trees appeared different, almost as if someone or something had altered them. The forest itself seemed to be playing tricks, filling her with doubt and unease. As they emerged into a clearing on higher ground, they heard rustling in the nearby trees. Shadow sent Princess, her owl familiar, to investigate, and the bird reported movement approaching through the forest.

Suddenly, three blink dogs burst from the treeline, their yellow-brown forms flickering in and out of existence as they ran desperately across the clearing. Close behind them came two displacer beasts, their tentacles writhing as they pursued their prey. But the true horror emerged moments later when the ground began to shake and trees started falling. A massive reptilian head crashed through the forest, followed by four more dragon-like heads of different colors. The creature was enormous—a Dracohydra, stretching over a hundred feet in length with five terrible heads and massive wings breaking through the canopy.

Bastion and Calliope immediately recognized the creature from their studies, warning the others that it possessed multiple breath weapons and could regenerate its heads unless struck with radiant damage. Before they could fully process the threat, one of the heads snapped forward and crushed a blink dog in its jaws, killing it instantly. Bastion reacted quickly, unleashing a powerful barrage of fire that struck one of the green heads repeatedly, causing it to shrivel and break away from the body. But their hope was short-lived—within moments, two new green heads sprouted from the wound, and the Dracohydra now had six heads instead of five.

The creature reared back and unleashed a devastating multi-colored breath weapon in a wide cone, incinerating another blink dog and severely wounding the displacer beasts. Shadow immediately cast a web to try to restrain one of the beasts and provide cover for their escape, while Barlo shouted for everyone to run. The party fled into the forest as the Dracohydra's remaining heads struck out at the fleeing creatures, killing them with bites infused with acid, ice, fire, lightning, and poison. Shadow sent Princess flying in the opposite direction as a decoy while she scooped up Artie and ran with the others. Behind them, they could hear the terrible sounds of bones cracking as the Dracohydra began to feast on its kills.

The party successfully escaped the clearing and made their way through the forest, guided by the helpful Almiraj they had befriended earlier. They eventually emerged from the darker woods and found themselves approaching the familiar territory of Skola Vale. Calliope noticed shimmering areas appearing and disappearing throughout the landscape—portals between the Feywild and the material plane, now functioning as they should. But as they stepped fully into Skola Vale, strange changes began to manifest. Bastion's hair suddenly grew longer, and a beard sprouted on his face. Sas appeared more mature, with small mushrooms growing more prominently on her shell. Barlo felt older, his joints aching and his gray hairs more pronounced. Most dramatically, Artie suddenly grew to his full size, his armor snapping off his expanding frame.

Barlo's confusion turned to alarm when he realized he had no memory of entering the Feywild at all—his last recollection was preparing to journey into the forest days ago. The others tried to explain what had happened, but Barlo couldn't comprehend the lost time. Bastion's communication device began emitting strange static, and when he checked it, he found a message explaining that they had been gone far longer than expected. The Elder of Skola Vale soon appeared with her assistants—a pixie, a half-orc, and a gnome—and delivered the shocking news: three years had passed in the material plane since the party had entered the Feywild.

The Elder explained that the village had been repaired and improved during their absence, and that their airship had been fully restored and enhanced by her assistants. A statue had even been erected in the center of the village, honoring the party as the heroes of Skola Vale. She warned them that the time distortion had occurred because they left during the instability, but assured them that traveling through Skola Vale's portals should now be safe. Bastion used a powerful restoration to return Barlo's lost memories, causing three years of experiences to flood back into his mind in an instant.

As the party began to process this revelation, Shadow demanded to know the whereabouts of her brother Beast and the dryad they had rescued. The Elder's pixie assistant claimed ignorance, but Shadow's suspicions were immediately aroused. Before the confrontation could escalate, Beast himself appeared alongside the dryad Deodara, who angrily accused the pixie Apple Cedarfrost of kidnapping her to be used as breeding stock for meenlocks. The Elder immediately trapped the treacherous pixie in a magical binding and had her taken away for questioning, while promising to investigate the full extent of the conspiracy.

The Elder then offered the party a keep and lands to the north if they would clear it of dangers, and informed them of the growing threat of the Bloodhands mercenaries who had attacked Skola Vale three years prior. She explained that the river flowing through the village connected to both the Feywild and the material plane, eventually reaching the mountains in the north and the ocean to the southeast. She also revealed that the party's actions in the Feywild—planting the seed for the hag in an area tainted by the Shadowfell—might have unforeseen consequences. Exhausted from their ordeal and the shocking revelations, the party decided to rest for the evening, knowing they had much to discuss and many decisions to make about their future adventures.

Classic

Last we left off, our heroes ventured into the treacherous depths of the Feywild, where they slew a massive electrical behir and planted a mysterious seed at the behest of the enigmatic May. Upon returning to claim their reward, they witnessed the restoration of Skola Vale's planar stability—but also discovered the terrible truth behind their benefactor's beautiful facade. As they departed, the illusion fell away, revealing May's true form: a cunning hag who had manipulated them into doing her bidding. The forest itself seemed to turn against them as they fled, with Shadow's carefully marked trail appearing altered and wrong, as if the Feywild was playing tricks on their very perception.

Their escape took a harrowing turn when they stumbled upon a Dracohydra—a massive, five-headed draconic monstrosity that tore through the forest in pursuit of fleeing blink dogs and displacer beasts. Despite Bastion's valiant attempt to destroy one of its heads, the creature's regenerative powers only made it stronger, sprouting two heads where one had fallen. The party fled as the beast unleashed devastating breath weapons of fire, ice, lightning, acid, and poison, barely escaping with their lives as the Dracohydra feasted on its kills behind them.

When they finally emerged into Skola Vale, they discovered the cruel price of their Feywild bargain. Three years had passed in the material plane during what felt like mere days to them. Bastion sprouted a beard, Barlo aged and lost all memory of their journey, and Artie grew to his full size in an instant. But the revelations didn't end there—Shadow's confrontation with the village Elder exposed a dark conspiracy involving the pixie Apple Cedarfrost, who had kidnapped the dryad Deodara for sinister purposes. Now, reunited with Shadow's brother Beast and facing the reality of a world that moved on without them, the party must grapple with lost time, broken memories restored, and the unsettling knowledge that their actions in the Feywild may have unleashed something far more dangerous than they intended.

Middle English

Harken well, ye gentle folke,
To tales of heroes brave and true;
Who ventured forth through Feywyld's cloke,
And faced what mortals dare not do!

The behir slain, its treasures found,
With electrum bright and gold in hand;
They planted seeds in hallowed ground,
And copied runes they could not understand.
To May's cottage did they wend their way,
That elfin maid of beauteous face;
She crushed the crystal blue that day,
And restored the Vale unto its place.

But Barlo's eye did backward turn,
And saw what glamour had concealed;
The gardens dead, the cottage stern,
A hag's true visage was revealed!
Through darkling woods they made their flight,
Where Shadow's marks seemed strangely changed;
Then came a beast of dreadful might,
A Dracohydra, six heads arranged!

With breath of fire and ice and death,
It slew the hounds that fled before;
The heroes ran with bated breath,
And 'scaped the beast's most fearsome roar.
But when they reached the Vale once more,
A cruel trick of time was played;
Three years had passed, though by their score,
But days within the Fey had stayed!

Now Barlo aged and Artie grown,
Their ship restored, their statue raised;
Yet treachery was also shown,
When pixie's crimes were brought and blazed.
What futures wait for heroes bold,
Who've lost three years to Feywyld's game?
Their deeds shall yet in time be told,
And ever shall we praise their name!

Snarky

Our heroic party completed their bargain with a totally-not-suspicious fey maiden named May, who rewarded them by fixing reality—and then immediately revealed herself to be a hag the moment they left, because apparently "read the fine print" applies to fey contracts too. The gang patted themselves on the back for a job well done and started heading home, only to be chased through the forest by a FIVE-HEADED DRACOHYDRA that was having a lovely afternoon snack of blink dogs and displacer beasts. Bastion helpfully tried to kill one of its heads, which just made it grow TWO MORE heads, proving once again that sometimes the smart play is just to RUN AWAY SCREAMING.

But the real plot twist? When they finally escaped back to Skola Vale, they discovered that THREE ENTIRE YEARS had passed in the material plane, because the Feywild has absolutely no respect for linear time. Barlo completely lost his memories of the whole adventure, Bastion sprouted a beard, Artie hulked out of his armor, and the village built them a statue—which is honestly the most productive thing that happened while they were gone. Oh, and that helpful pixie assistant? Turns out she was kidnapping dryads for a meenlock breeding operation, because this campaign needed MORE nightmare fuel. The party now has to process that they've lost three years, may have accidentally helped a hag do something terrible with Shadowfell corruption, and their enemies have had plenty of time to get stronger while they were busy not aging in fairy land.

Limerick

The behir fell with electrical spark,
They planted a seed in the dark.
May crushed crystal blue,
Revealed hag form true,
As her garden turned deathly and stark.

The forest path twisted and changed,
Shadow's markers seemed rearranged.
A Dracohydra came,
With heads breathing flame,
So they fled while the monster deranged!

Through portals they stepped back to Vale,
But time had spun quite the tall tale.
Three years had gone by,
Bastion's beard reached his thigh,
And poor Artie burst out of his mail!

The Elder brought news of their ship,
Restored during their temporal slip.
A statue now stands,
They're offered new lands,
If they clear out the keep's deadly grip.

Then Beast appeared with the dryad,
Exposing a pixie's dark triad.
Apple Cedarfrost,
Had kidnapping cost,
Now bound while the Elder's applied ad.
