Short
The party ventured deep into the black dragon's lair, driven by the cats of Ultharr's promise of power and the urgency of Vecna's looming threat and the kidnapped God of Time. As they approached, they heard the dragon taunting a captive Satyr Warlock of Tharizdun about Vyerith kidnapping him and prophecies from Tharizdun. After preparing for battle with transformations and potions—Sas becoming a giant eagle, Shadow gaining flight and invisibility, and Barlo infusing himself with lightning breath—Shadow scouted ahead and discovered the dragon clinging to a tall black obelisk, surrounded by acidic fog and hidden archers. When the party entered the chamber, the dragon's terrifying presence paralyzed most of them with fear, but they rallied as Calliope played her pan flute to grant Barlo flight, Barnaby 'Blink' Binkle cast haste on Sas, and Vorn blessed her with protection.
The battle intensified as Shadow's poison arrows revealed strange energy flowing from the dragon toward a mysterious orb on the ship's mast, while Barlo grappled onto the dragon's back and unleashed fire. Sas and Bastion attacked the orb's protective mechanism, but the dragon's devastating acid breath forced Sas out of her eagle form and sent both crashing to the deck below. In a shocking betrayal, the Vorn Daggerhand unlocked the orb mechanism, stole the orb, and attempted to teleport away, though his spell failed, leaving him stranded. With the orb removed from its position, the party's attacks became more effective against the now-vulnerable dragon, and they pressed their assault with renewed determination despite the orb still providing some healing to their enemy and the dragon's fierce retaliation against the Aarakocra Paladin.
Summary
The party stood at the threshold of the black dragon's lair, their quest to slay the beast drawing them deeper into the winding tunnels. The cats of Ultharr had promised them power if they succeeded, and the stakes were high—Vecna's haunting presence loomed over them, and time itself had become unstable since the God of Time was kidnapped. As they approached the final corner, a vile voice echoed through the chamber, taunting a captive about torture and prophecies. The captive, their voice strained and familiar, spoke of Vyerith kidnapping him and how the prophecies were supposedly from Tharizdun, leading to the death of his familiar. The dragon's cruel laughter was followed by a scream that sent chills through the party.
- Dangerous voice: "How long must you make me torture you? Don't you want to release this mortal coil?"
- A voice,… seems strangely familiar: "I told you, I believed the prophecies were from Tharizdun, but Vyerith said I had everything wrong. Then he captured me and brought me here. You killed my familiar and have tortured me since… I have nothing to hide from you. And She is the one who fixed the book. I told you that!! So I don't know ... even remember what you wanted from me anymore…"
- Dangerous voice again: "That might be all there is… but then again, I love the torture…"
Before entering the lair, the party prepared for battle. Sas transformed into a giant eagle, her form shifting to provide both mobility and protection. Shadow drank a potion that granted her the ability to fly, while Barlo infused himself with the power to breathe lightning. Shadow turned invisible and crept forward to scout the entrance, her keen senses picking up the sounds of scuttling and the dim greenish glow of acidic fog. An arrow suddenly struck her from the mist, revealing the presence of hidden archers. She called out a warning to her companions, describing the dragon's location approximately one hundred feet to the northwest, clinging to a tall black obelisk.
As the party entered the chamber, the dragon's terrifying presence washed over them. Most of the group felt an overwhelming fear grip their hearts, freezing them in place and preventing them from advancing. The dragon's vile voice welcomed them, and the sound of leathery wings filled the air as it took flight. Hidden archers fired from the mist, their arrows striking Artie and Calliope, though Shadow and Barlo remained unscathed. Calliope, despite her fear, played a lively tune on her pan flute, granting Barlo the ability to fly. The Gnome Wizard, Barnaby 'Blink' Binkle, cast a spell of haste upon Sas, doubling her speed and enhancing her defenses, while the Aarakocra Paladin, Vorn, blessed her with a protective shield.
Shadow soared higher into the fog-filled chamber, her vision cutting through the mist to reveal the dragon clinging to the obelisk. She fired a poison arrow that struck true, and strange reddish-black and gold energy emanated from the wound, shooting back towards a location in the northwest. Her second arrow also hit, and again, colored light wisps flowed from the dragon towards an unseen crystal. Barlo flew up to the obelisk and grappled onto the dragon's back, his claws digging into its scales as he slashed and breathed fire down its neck. The dragon retaliated, striking Barlo with its claws and attempting to dislodge him, but Barlo held on with fierce determination.
Sas and Bastion, now free from their fear, flew towards the ship's mast where a glowing orb sat encased in a metallic mechanism adorned with red, green, and purple crystals. Sas attacked the mechanism with her talons, but it proved to be well-protected. Bastion struck with his rapier, dealing damage and causing small crystal shards to break off. Calliope attempted to weaken the dragon with a spell of dissonant whispers, but the dragon resisted the full effect. Shadow continued her assault, firing arrows at both the orb and the dragon, while her summoned air elemental positioned itself near the orb, ready to strike.
The dragon unleashed its acid breath, a devastating torrent that struck Sas and Bastion on the ship's mast. The force of the attack caused Sas to revert from her eagle form, and both she and Bastion plummeted from the mast, crashing onto the ship's deck below. Sas reached out to grab Bastion as they fell, attempting to cushion his impact. The hidden archers continued their relentless assault, firing arrows from the mist at the party members. Despite the chaos, the Aarakocra Paladin bravely moved forward and healed Calliope with a touch of divine energy, while the Gnome Wizard sent magical missiles streaking towards the dragon.
As the battle raged on, the Vorn Daggerhand, who had been working on the orb mechanism, successfully unlocked it with his thieves' tools. He took the orb and placed it in his bag, looking at his companions with a sorrowful expression. He apologized, saying "sorry, guys," before pulling out a scroll and attempting to teleport away. Bastion, recognizing the betrayal, attempted to counter the spell, but the magic was too powerful for him to stop. However, the rogue's own attempt to cast the spell also failed, leaving him stranded on the mast with the stolen orb.
With the orb no longer protecting the dragon, the party's attacks became more effective. Sas cast a powerful healing spell on Bastion, restoring his strength, and then summoned a skeletal hand that crushed into the dragon, dealing significant damage. Bastion fired scorching rays at the orb mechanism, causing more crystals to break off. Calliope attempted to trap the dragon in an illusion, but the dragon's wisdom allowed it to resist. Shadow, still invisible, flew towards the orb and fired arrows, while Barlo continued his relentless assault from the ground, slashing and breathing fire at the dragon.
The dragon, now vulnerable without the orb's protection, fought more fiercely. It attacked the Aarakocra Paladin with its claws, dealing devastating damage. The Gnome Wizard, Barnaby 'Blink' Binkle, bravely rushed forward, shouting his name as he launched firebolts at the dragon. The party observed that the orb still possessed some healing properties, as yellow and white light flowed from it towards the dragon, mending some of the wounds they had inflicted. The battle continued with renewed intensity, the party determined to defeat the dragon and reclaim the stolen orb from the treacherous rogue.

Classic
Last we left off, our intrepid party ventured deep into the black dragon's lair, driven by the promise of power from the cats of Ultharr and haunted by Vecna's looming presence. Time itself had grown unstable since the God of Time's kidnapping, and the stakes had never been higher. As they approached the dragon's chamber, they heard the beast's cruel voice taunting a captive—a captive Satyr Warlock of Tharizdun, broken by torture, who spoke of being kidnapped by Vyerith and prophecies from Tharizdun. The captive's screams echoed through the tunnels, a grim prelude to the battle ahead.
The party prepared themselves with transformations and enchantments before Shadow crept forward invisibly to scout. What she discovered was a nightmare: a massive chamber filled with acidic fog, hidden archers in the mist, and the dragon itself clinging to a towering black obelisk. As they entered, the dragon's terrifying presence overwhelmed most of the party with fear, freezing them in place. The battle erupted in chaos—Shadow's arrows revealed strange energy flowing from the dragon to a mysterious orb on a ship's mast, while Barlo grappled onto the dragon's back, slashing and breathing fire. Sas and Bastion fought to destroy the orb's protective mechanism, only to be struck by the dragon's devastating acid breath, sending them plummeting to the deck below.
But the true shock came when the Vorn Daggerhand, having unlocked the orb mechanism, seized the artifact and attempted to teleport away with it, apologizing to his companions as he betrayed them. Though his escape failed, the orb was now in enemy hands. With the dragon's protection weakened, the party rallied—Sas summoned crushing skeletal hands, Shadow fired from the shadows, and brave Barnaby 'Blink' Binkle charged forward with firebolts blazing. Now, with the dragon vulnerable, a traitor in their midst, and the orb's power still flowing to their enemy, the party fights desperately to survive and reclaim what was stolen...
Snarky
Welcome to the most FUNCTIONAL this adventuring party has ever been: standing frozen in terror while a black dragon roasts them and their rogue literally tries to steal the MacGuffin mid-combat. The party descended into the dragon's lair to fulfill a quest from the cats of Ultharr (yes, cats), because apparently stopping Vecna and fixing broken time wasn't enough on their plate. They found a captive being tortured, heard screaming, and thought "yeah, let's definitely go in there."
The battle was peak D&D chaos: Sas became a giant eagle, Shadow went invisible, Barlo GRAPPLED ONTO THE DRAGON'S BACK and breathed fire down its neck like an absolute maniac, and their Vorn Daggerhand decided THIS was the perfect moment to betray everyone and teleport away with the magical orb keeping the dragon alive. Except he failed his own spell check, so now he's just awkwardly standing on a mast holding stolen goods while everyone fights for their lives. The dragon's acid breath literally knocked Sas out of eagle form mid-flight, the Gnome Wizard is screaming his own name while throwing firebolts, and somehow the orb is STILL healing the dragon even after being stolen. Nothing says "we're winning" like your rogue committing grand larceny during a boss fight.
Middle English
Harken well, ye brave and true,
To tales of wyrm and treachery new;
The party ventured deep below,
Where black dragon's lair did glow.
Through winding tunnels dark they pressed,
By Ultharr's cats with power blessed.
The beast did taunt a satyr soul,
Whilst acid mists did round them roll;
Sas took eagle's form in flight,
Shadow drank of potion's might,
And Barlo breathed the lightning's flame,
As into dragon's den they came.
Fear did grip their mortal hearts,
As hidden archers loosed their darts;
Yet Barlo grappled dragon's spine,
Whilst Shadow's arrows flew so fine.
Upon the mast an orb did gleam,
Protected by a crystal's sheen.
The dragon's breath, like acid rain,
Did strike our heroes down with pain;
But lo! A darker treachery—
The Vorn Daggerhand, in perfidy,
Did steal the orb and try to flee,
Though magick failed his villainy.
Now vulnerable, the wyrm did fight,
As brave companions pressed with might;
Though yellow light did heal the beast,
Their valor would not be decreased.
With blade and spell and arrow's song,
They battled fierce the whole night long!
Limerick
The party crept into the dragon's dark den,
Where torture and prophecy echoed again.
They buffed and they flew,
As fear gripped the crew,
And archers shot arrows at Shadow and friends.
Brave Barlo leapt onto the dragon's scaled back,
While Shadow's arrows traced a magical track.
The orb on the mast,
Healed the dragon so fast,
As Sas and dear Bastion fell from attack.
The Vorn Daggerhand worked with his lockpicking skill,
He grabbed the orb quick with treacherous will.
"Sorry, guys," he confessed,
His scroll teleport stressed,
But the magic just failed and he stood frozen still.
Without the orb's shield, the dragon grew weak,
As Barlo breathed fire and Shadow did sneak.
The Paladin bled,
While Barnaby 'Blink' Binkle led,
His firebolts flying with courage to speak.
The battle raged on in the acid-filled air,
With skeletal hands and spells everywhere.
The orb's healing light,
Still aided the fight,
But victory called to the heroes who dared.
