(S104) The Last Hunt of the Feywild Dracohydra

Interrupted by a sneezing blink dog, the party is yanked into the Feywild alongside Ellywick Tumblestrum. Signing a contract with The Last Hunt, they track down and brutally slay a multi-headed Dracohydra. Using guild echoglass to capture its essence, they earn gold vouchers and secure their place as official monster hunters.

S104: The Last Hunt of the Feywild Dracohydra

Date: 2026-04-11

Short

After looting the fallen bullywugs and discovering magical boots and gold-stamped tokens, the party's rest was shattered by the chaotic appearance of a malfunctioning blink dog, whose uncontrolled sneezes sent Shadow and Calliope tumbling into the Feywild. There, they were reunited with Ellywick Tumblestrum, the planeswalker bard from their Eberron adventure, who had contracted a magical cold from the very same blink dog and could no longer complete her contract with a monster-hunting guild called The Last Hunt. She asked the party to take on the job in her place β€” tracking and harvesting a fey Dracohydra β€” and after reviewing the contract, Shadow, Sas, and Barlo each signed on, their hands briefly flickering with fey energy as they did. Armed with scavenger pouches and guided by the still-sneezing blink dog, they ventured into a decayed stretch of the Feywild to face the beast.

The battle against the Dracohydra was brutal and relentless. The creature hovered on vast wings, sprouted new heads faster than the party could sever them, and unleashed devastating prismatic breath that reverted Sas from her eagle form and battered the group repeatedly. Barlo was seized by the Hydra's tail and bitten savagely, while Calliope drew its attention in ape form and ultimately reached into its mind to conjure its deepest fears. The turning point came when Sas landed a necrotic strike that cut off the Hydra's regeneration entirely, and Shadow, repositioning silently above the battlefield, fired a final arrow into the creature's writhing mass of heads β€” dropping it for good. With the beast felled, the party used their Echoglass crystals to capture a spectral record of the Hydra for the guild's archives and each received a gold voucher redeemable for a magical item, marking the successful completion of their first hunt.

Summary

The dust of battle had barely settled when the party turned their attention to the fallen bullywugs, rifling through the remains of their enemies. Among the spoils they uncovered a handful of blank gold-stamped tokens β€” the currency of this strange realm β€” along with a curious pair of magical boots. Bastion set about quietly identifying the items while the others kept watch, the air around the waterfall still and heavy with the aftermath of violence.

The stillness was broken by something unexpected: a wet, canine sneeze echoing through the chamber. A blink dog had appeared from nowhere, its nose twitching, its eyes wide and frantic. Before anyone could react, it sneezed again β€” and vanished. Then it reappeared. Then it sneezed once more. The creature's teleportation was clearly misfiring, sending it lurching in and out of existence in rapid, uncontrolled bursts. Shadow attempted to grab hold of the dog as it materialized nearby, managing to seize it just as it sneezed directly into her β€” and both of them disappeared entirely.

Calliope, still lumbering about in the form of a giant ape, was the next to fall victim to the dog's erratic magic. The creature sneezed near her, and something in her Feywild compass resonated with the burst of planar energy. In an instant, the great ape simply vanished. Moments later, a halfling woman blinked into existence in the middle of the chamber β€” and then immediately sneezed and blinked right back out again. The party barely had time to register the familiar face before she was gone.

They found themselves in the Feywild. The geography was hauntingly familiar β€” the same waterfall, the same rocky terrain β€” but everything was saturated with impossible color, glowing lichen crawling up ancient tree sculptures, luminous plants swaying without wind. Calliope recognized it immediately and, still in her ape form, began bounding through the undergrowth with barely contained delight, scooping up flowers and pressing her nose to glowing rocks. Sas, still in the form of a giant eagle, was considerably less thrilled, screeching and barrel-rolling through the air in a panic.

The halfling reappeared β€” sneezing, blinking, and deeply apologetic. It was Ellywick Tumblestrum, the planeswalker bard who had helped the party navigate the plane of Eberron not so long ago. She explained, between involuntary teleportations, that she had contracted some kind of magical cold from the blink dog, and it was wreaking havoc on her ability to control her planar travel. She had been in the middle of a contract for a guild called The Last Hunt β€” tracking a fey Dracohydra β€” when the sickness had rendered her completely unable to finish the job. She asked the party if they would be willing to take it on in her stead.

The party was cautious but curious. Shadow read through the guild contract carefully, noting its clauses about retrieval gear, echo compasses that would record a hunter's final moments, and the guild's strict ownership of all specialized equipment. Nothing in it seemed overtly sinister, and Ellywick vouched for the organization's integrity based on her own long experience with them. One by one, Shadow, Sas, and Barlo pressed their names to the contract β€” each noticing, with some unease, that their hands briefly flickered with fey energy as they signed. Each was handed a specialized Network Satchel filled with tools for harvesting monster specimens, and Ellywick welcomed them as the newest trackers of The Last Hunt. The blink dog, still sneezing intermittently, turned and began leading the way into the forest.

Ellywick stayed behind, too unstable to be of use, while the party followed the dog deeper into a decayed stretch of the Feywild. The trees here were massive and gnarled, their roots forming great walls and archways, the plant life thick and strange. Sas wove a cloak of shadow and silence around the group as they crept forward, and the party moved like ghosts through the undergrowth. They could hear the creature before they saw it β€” something enormous shifting in the darkness beyond a natural archway of twisted roots.

The Dracohydra was a terrifying thing. It resembled a smaller, wilder cousin of the legendary Tiamat, its many heads writhing and snapping, its body hovering above the ground on vast wings. Shadow struck first, turning invisible and ascending high into the air before loosing a volley of arrows that severed one of the creature's heads clean from its neck. The victory was short-lived. Two new heads erupted from the stump almost immediately, and the Hydra retaliated with a breath of prismatic, multi-colored energy that washed over the party in a blinding wave, dealing devastating damage and reverting Sas from her eagle form entirely, sending her tumbling back to the ground as herself.

The battle was brutal and chaotic. Calliope charged through the brambles in her ape form, pounding her chest and splashing the creature to draw its attention. Barlo hurled a javelin at the airborne beast and used a Immovable Rod to suspend himself in the air, trying desperately to close the distance. The Hydra grew heads faster than the party could remove them, its prismatic breath recharging with terrifying speed, and it used its massive tail to restrain Barlo, planting something dark within him before biting him savagely. At one point the creature phased partially between planes, making it nearly impossible to strike cleanly.

The tide began to turn when Sas managed to land a necrotic strike that prevented the Hydra from regaining any hit points β€” cutting off its natural regeneration entirely. Calliope, drawing on the last of her deepest magic, reached into the creature's mind and conjured its worst fears into vivid, psychic reality. The Hydra reeled, frightened and bleeding, its movements growing desperate. Barlo, furious and reckless, threw his shield to the ground and fought with nothing but his fists and fury, unleashing a devastating flurry of blows that left the creature staggering.

Shadow, repositioning silently high above the battlefield, drew back and fired one final shot β€” straight into the soft, fleshy center of the creature's writhing mass of heads. The arrow struck true, and the Dracohydra's heads went still. The great beast crashed to the ground in a heap, its wings folding beneath it. Artie, Shadow's owlbear companion, immediately waddled over to stand on top of the fallen creature with an air of supreme self-satisfaction, as though he had personally ended the fight.

The party gathered around the fallen Hydra and retrieved the Echoglass crystals from their scavenger pouches, pressing them to the creature's body as the contract instructed. A spectral, holographic image of the Draco Hydra shimmered to life inside each crystal β€” a record of the beast's final moments, preserved for the guild's archives. With the contract fulfilled, each party member found a gold voucher tucked inside their pouch, redeemable for a magical item of their choosing. They had survived their first hunt, earned their place in The Last Hunt, and were now standing in the middle of the Feywild β€” tired, battered, and wondering how long they had been gone.

Memorable Moments

Calliope, a giant ape, is touched by the blink dog's sneeze and simply vanishes mid-frolic, leaving the party bewildered.

The party had just arrived in a new area when the blink dog sneezed near Calliope, teleporting her to the Feywild without warning.

"That could be fun."
β€” Calliope Galanodel

Muttering under her breath as a 30-foot ape about the idea of catching Ellywick's magical sneezing cold that causes uncontrollable teleportation.

Shadow fires a final arrow into the center of the Dracohydra's body, delivering the killing blow and sending the massive creature crashing to the ground.

After a grueling battle where the Hydra grew to nine heads and critically hit Barlo, Shadow's shot ended the fight.

Barlo drops his shield entirely to fight as a monk, delivering a flurry of nearly sixty points of damage to the Dracohydra in a single turn.

Frustrated by the flying creature and running out of options, Barlo went all-in and unleashed his most devastating turn of the fight.

NPCs

Ellywick Tumblestrum

A halfling bard and planeswalker who previously helped the party in Eberron. She holds the Apex rank in The Last Hunt guild and recruits the party to hunt a Draco Hydra after contracting a magical sneezing sickness from a blink dog that causes her planar abilities to malfunction, blinking her in and out of locations uncontrollably.

A fey creature that Ellywick was tracking. Its magical sneezing cold is the source of her uncontrollable teleportation, and its sneezes also caused several party members to be involuntarily transported to the Feywild.

Dracohydra

A massive, multi-headed flying draconic monstrosity resembling a baby Tiamat. It can breathe prismatic energy in a wide cone, phase partially between planes to avoid attacks, regrow two heads for every one it loses, and use its tail to restrain enemies. It was the target of the party's first Last Hunt contract.

Arktos "Artie"

Shadow's owlbear companion, Artie. He participated in the hunt against the Draco Hydra and stood triumphantly over the fallen beast after its defeat.

Locations

Portal Chamber

The location where the party started the session, containing the remains of the bullywug fight and the portal they were preparing to enter.

The Feywild

A mystical, magical echo of the material realm featuring familiar geography to the waterfall area the party just left, but filled with vibrant glowing plants, thick sculpted trees, and glowing lichen. Time and planar travel behave strangely here.

Lair of the Dracohydra in the Feywild

A decayed section of the Feywild forest featuring a massive wall of intertwined roots, natural archways, and high ceilings. The most decayed part of the area the party had encountered, with a wooden bridge area where the final battle took place.

Items

Gold Stamped Tokens

Blank gold tokens or 'slugs' used as currency in this realm, found by the party while looting the bullywugs. Unlike normal gold coins, these are simply stamped gold with no markings.

Boots of Walking

A pair of magical boots found among the bullywug loot that require attunement and weigh three pounds.

Magic Feywild Compass

A compass carried by Calliope that is tied to the Feywild. It reacted when the blink dog sneezed near her, contributing to her involuntary teleportation into the Feywild.

The Last Hunt Contract

A magical guild agreement for The Last Hunt. It designates the signer as a specialized forensic and retrieval agent, includes an 'eternal indemnity' clause where an echo compass records the hunter's final moments for the guild, and specifies that all retrieval gear remains guild property. Signing it caused a brief physical manifestation of fey energy in each signer.

Network Satchel

A specialized satchel provided by The Last Hunt to each signing member, containing spatial anchor tags, alchemical files, tincture jars, and preservative flasks for harvesting monster specimens.

Echo Compass

A guild-issued device used for communication between the hunter and The Last Hunt. It remains active even if the bearer expires, capturing data of their final moments for forensic improvement.

Immovable Rod

A rod used by Barlo to suspend himself ten feet in the air during combat, allowing him to engage the flying Draco Hydra in melee.

Javelin

A simple thrown weapon used by Barlo to strike the Draco Hydra while it was out of melee reach in the air.

Short Sword of Eberron

An enchanted blade from the plane of Eberron, considered for use by a party member during the confrontation with the Hydra.

Echoglass

A specialized Echoglass included in the Network Satchel, used to absorb the essence of a defeated hunt target. Once filled, it displays a spectral, holographic image of the creature inside and can be placed into guild plinths for forensic review.

Gold Voucher

A reward token provided by The Last Hunt upon completion of a contract, redeemable for a magical item of the holder's choice.

Spells

Identify (Ritual)

Cast as a ritual by Bastion to determine the properties of the magical items found on the bullywug bodies, including the boots.

Mage Hand

Used to discreetly offer a tissue to the sneezing Ellywick Tumblestrum from a safe distance, avoiding contact with her magical cold.

Pass Without Trace

Cast by Sas to envelop the party in shadows and silence as they approached the Draco Hydra's lair, granting a significant bonus to stealth. Concentration was later dropped during combat.

Polymorph

The spells maintaining Calliope in the form of a giant ape and Sas in the form of a giant eagle. Sas was forcibly reverted to her natural tortle form after taking enough radiant damage from the Draco Hydra's prismatic breath.

Invisibility

Used by Shadow in the Snow to vanish from sight, allowing her to reposition forty feet in the air and strike the Hydra with a surprise attack. She used it again later to hide after repositioning.

Chill Touch

Cast by Sas against the Draco Hydra, dealing necrotic damage and preventing the creature from regaining hit points, neutralizing its natural regeneration for the remainder of the fight.

Charm Monster

Attempted by Calliope to magically beguile the Draco Hydra. The creature resisted the enchantment, though it appeared to have some influence on its behavior early in the fight.

Phantasmal Killer

Cast by Calliope as her last fourth-level spell, tapping into the Draco Hydra's deepest fears. It dealt significant psychic damage and left the creature frightened, turning the tide of the battle.

Weapons True Strike

A cantrip considered by Calliope that allows the caster to use their charisma score for attack and damage rolls, enhancing accuracy for a follow-up weapon strike.

Classic

Last we left off, our party stood in the aftermath of a hard-won battle against the bullywugs, sifting through the spoils of their fallen enemies β€” gold-stamped tokens and a curious pair of magical boots among the findings. But the stillness that followed was shattered by something far stranger: a blink dog, sneezing uncontrollably, lurching in and out of existence with wild, misfiring teleportation. In the chaos that followed, Shadow seized the creature mid-sneeze and vanished alongside it, while Calliope β€” still lumbering about in the magnificent form of a giant ape β€” was swept up in a burst of planar energy that sent her blinking out of the Material Plane entirely.

They found themselves in the Feywild. The same waterfall, the same rocky terrain β€” but drenched in impossible color, glowing lichen and luminous plants swaying without wind. And there, sneezing and blinking in and out of existence with deep apology, was a familiar face: Ellywick Tumblestrum, the planeswalking bard who had guided them through Eberron not so long ago. Stricken with a magical cold contracted from the very blink dog that had dragged them here, Ellywick was unable to complete a contract she had taken with a guild known as The Last Hunt β€” the tracking and retrieval of a fey Dracohydra. She asked the party to take the job in her stead. Shadow read the contract carefully, noting its clauses and its costs, and one by one, Shadow, Sas, and Barlo pressed their names to the page β€” each feeling a brief, unsettling flicker of fey energy pass through their hands as they signed.

The hunt that followed was nothing short of harrowing. The Dracohydra β€” a terrifying, many-headed beast hovering on vast wings, breathing prismatic destruction β€” proved a savage and relentless foe, regrowing heads faster than the party could sever them and phasing between planes to evade their strikes. But through Sas cutting off its regeneration with a well-placed necrotic blow, Calliope reaching into its mind and conjuring its deepest fears into psychic reality, and Barlo throwing aside his shield to fight with nothing but fury and fists, the creature was brought low. It was Shadow, repositioning silently high above the battlefield, who loosed the final arrow β€” straight and true into the writhing mass of heads β€” and sent the great beast crashing to the ground. Artie, Shadow's owlbear companion, immediately waddled over to stand atop the fallen Hydra with an air of supreme self-satisfaction. The Echoglass crystals were pressed to the creature's body, the contract was fulfilled, and each hunter found a gold voucher waiting in their pouch β€” redeemable for a magic item of their choosing. The Last Hunt had its record. And now, battered and wondering how long they've been gone, our party stands in the heart of the Feywild, with no clear road home...

Snarky

The party's post-battle looting was rudely interrupted by what can only be described as the world's most chaotic dog β€” a blink dog with a magical cold that was teleporting itself, Shadow, and Calliope directly into the Feywild, because apparently a normal sneeze just wasn't dramatic enough. There they were reunited with Ellywick Tumblestrum, a planeswalking bard who had somehow managed to contract a supernatural illness from said dog mid-contract, and who had the audacity to ask the party to hunt a fey Dracohydra on her behalf. To absolutely no one's surprise, they said yes, signed a contract that made their hands glow with fey energy (totally fine, very normal), and followed a sneezing dog into the cursed woods like the well-adjusted adventurers they are.

The Dracohydra β€” essentially Tiamat's feral, overgrown cousin β€” proceeded to grow two heads for every one the party cut off, breathe prismatic nightmare fuel at them, phase between planes, and personally plant something dark inside Barlo, which is a sentence that raises many questions no one is ready to answer. The tide only turned when Sas shut down the creature's regeneration and Calliope psychically showed it its worst fears, which, given that it was fighting THIS party, was probably a vision of itself. Shadow finished it with a single arrow to the throat, Artie the owlbear immediately claimed full credit by standing on the corpse, and everyone walked away with a guild voucher for a magic item β€” which is honestly the most functional reward system any of them have ever encountered.

Middle English

Lythe and listin, gentilmen,
Of adventurers bold and true;
Who fought through fens and Feywild strange,
And lived to tell it through!

A blink dog sneezed and tore the veil,
And Shadow grabbed it fast;
Both vanished in a burst of light,
To realms unseen and vast.
Then Calliope, great ape and all,
Was swept away at last.

There came a halfling, blinking wild,
Ellywick, known of old;
She'd caught a cold of planar kind,
And could not keep her hold.
She begged the party take her hunt,
And sign the contract scrolled.

They tracked the Dracohydra deep,
Through gnarled and twisted wood;
Its heads grew back with every cut,
Its breath of prism flood.
But Sas cut off its healing swift,
And Calliope its mind subdued.

Then Shadow, high above the fray,
Drew back her arrow true;
She loosed the shot through writhing heads,
And split the beast in two.
And Artie stood upon the beast,
As only Artie do!

Limerick

A blink dog sneezed into Shadow one day,
And whisked her and Calliope far away.
To the Feywild they flew,
With its impossible hue,
While Sas screeched and barrel-rolled in dismay!

Then Ellywick blinked in with a sneeze,
A planeswalker plagued by a magical wheeze.
She'd a contract to share,
For a Hydra most rare,
And the party signed on with great ease!

The Dracohydra writhed, snapped, and flew,
Its prismatic breath blasting the crew.
Each head that was slain
Grew back two again,
And poor Barlo was bitten clean through!

Sas struck with necrosis to halt its regrowth,
While Calliope's magic fulfilled her sworn oath.
She conjured its fears,
Barlo fought through his tears,
And the beast staggered, weakened by both!

Then Shadow soared high with her bow drawn up tight,
And loosed one true arrow to end the long fight.
The Hydra crashed down,
Artie claimed the renown,
And the guild vouchers gleamed in the Feywild's strange light!
